Meditation: My Journey And How You Can Get Started

Up until three years ago I had never meditated- I didn’t even think about meditating. I was so busy just living life aimlessly that taking the time to pause, reflect, think and consciously breathe didn’t even occur to me. When you find yourself so overwhelmed, stressed and burnt out the only thing you can do is stop and breathe. I started to meditate to bring myself back to center, to gather my thoughts, to quiet my mind and to receive answers. I truly felt like I didn’t know my purpose or have any idea on how to find it, but I knew it lived inside of me somewhere.


I truly believe that meditation is our closest connection to Source energy. I believe Source Energy, sometimes called the Universe or God is a limitless being that lives inside each and every one of us. It is why I truly believe that we are all made the same and we are all truly connected. When you truly quiet your body, your mind and allow yourself to tap into that limitless connection, that source energy inside of you, you can receive such profound thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences. It is truly such a beautiful thing to feel part of something bigger. Meditating personally helps me to feel collective. It’s like my whole body is still and all that is awake is that energy inside of me. That choice. That being, that something, that is within all of us when we close our eyes.


I use mediation often when I find my thoughts cluttered and colliding. I often turn to mediation when I am looking for answers and when I want to shut off the lenses of society and commentary from my ego. Meditation has been such an important resource in my growing consciousness and connection. It has become a necessary tool in my expansion and connection to myself and to others.


If you want to start meditating the first thing you have to do is get quiet. Find somewhere where you can be quiet, close your eyes and just breathe. Focus on your breath as you inhale and feel the breath move through you. Concentrate as you exhale and feel your body relax as you release. Set a timer for 2 minutes and focus on your breath. Don’t worry if your mind fills with thoughts. Try not to hold on to them; let them pass and connect again to your breath.


Meditation did not come easy to me and I am still learning how to relax into the state of meditation. I do not judge my meditations on how deep they are perceived to be or how connected I feel after. I pride myself instead on responding to my minds need to relax.

1. YouTube – There are so many resources for meditation on YouTube. If you are looking for guided meditations on any subject YouTube will have them!


2. Calm App -This app is full of guided meditation, frequencies, meditation series, open meditations and timers. I love using the Calm app in the morning. I simply set the timer for 5 minutes and breathe before I even get out of bed.


3. 1Giant Mind – This app is great for beginners as it teaches you to meditate through a step-by-step process. It is patient and you can redo it as many times as you wish. It also gives you time for reflection to record any feelings that arise during or after your meditation.
